Stealing Moments on Set with @simonchaudoir

To see more playful portraits, follow @simonchaudoir.

The Instagram photos of a fellow film director first inspired Simon Chaudoir’s (@simonchaudoir) playful, sometimes macabre, portraits. “For a long time I had the image in my mind of myself lying on a studio floor having been crushed by a falling lamp,” explains Simon, who leads a harried, globetrotting life directing music videos and commercials. “It expressed something that I felt about my working life. I realized that Instagram gave me the platform to explore such images.”

With filmmaking equipment and backdrops at his disposal, Simon crafts jarring photos that draw from elements of Renaissance paintings, surrealist photography and the avant-garde. “Way, way, back I studied Fine Art,” says Simon of his university years. “This was the first time since then that I had the pleasure of producing something purely for my own pleasure and amusement.”

“Sometimes when I accept a job, knowing the equipment that’s going to be used and the people involved, I’ve already conceived what the picture of the day will be,” he says. But the photos themselves tend to come together quickly. “All my pictures are taken in snatched moments when I am working for other people,” he says, “lunch-breaks, lulls in shooting or when we wrap.”

like I kinda don’t like it when people see girls cross dressing (crossplay) in cosplay they just go “oh! it reminds me of takarazuka!” instead of like the anime of the cosplay. I LOVE takarazuka, don’t get me wrong. but i just really don’t get how ppl can like not see the difference? And when guys…

I can see why it’d be annoying to hear that since cosplaying/crossplaying seems like it has a lot of hard work and dedication and passion going into it, and then someone just making a comment like that and not acknowledging the actual cosplay. Personally, I think you pull off a lot of the male characters WAY better than most of the guys I’ve seen. And I personally think a lot of females can pull off male characters in general. Some just have the facial features for it or are androngynous enough to be able to do males. It’s probably frustrating to have to put work into a cosplay/crossplay and then just have someone just sorta put it down in a way. I happen to love your Kotestsu cosplay out of all the ones I’ve seen and I acknowledge it AS Kotestsu since that’s the character you dressed up as, and not something like “wow looks like just that one group I’ve seen :)”. I hope these comments don’t make you so irritated that you’d want to stop cosplaying though, because they’re so charming and admirable.

QQ thank you! this doesn’t upset me to the point that I don’t wanna do this anymore so no worries! but it’s just kinda irritating to see over and over again … OTL

Totally understandable ! It’s just irritating to be told something like that over and over. I can relate a bit, but with my art, because people tend to call it “anime style” when it’s not. It’s a bit discouraging and very irritating to be told that over and over when I’m trying to get away from a totally anime style aha. Maybe that’s how it is with your crossplays/cosplays?? I’m glad you’ll still be doing your awesome cosplays though, I always love to see them on my dash !!

omg. that anime and non anime style thing!! my friends get that A LOT too and it pisses me off OTL that kind of comment and categorization really confuses them! I hope you overcame that problem already > < only people who don’t understand judge it as “anime style”. sigh… people just reflect to things based too much on stereotypes…

And when guys cosplay the male char like they just never get that sort of comment? like kinda saying only male cosplay male char is legit, girl cosplay girl char is legit and if you wanna turn that around and it’s not legit anymore? it just kinda offends me. am i being too sensitive or something? but i just keep getting this reaction and it’s really really kinda starting to piss me off.
